In the United States, over 5o million people are having some kind of hair loss problems. Over those, almost half are women. So, it is safe to assume that you are not alone.

So, why do we start having hair loss problem then? This is the one big question that everyone seems to be asking about. Naturally, everyone loses a little bit of hair every day and it is alright, because our body will replace it overtime. But for more serious problems, there can be variety of reasons that we need to understand before we look for the cure or ways to prevent them. Below are some of the common explanations on why hair loss happens:

Genetics: This is one of the main culprits of men’s hair loss problems. Basically, if you fall into this category, you inherited your hair problem from your parents. Out of their control, they pass on the genetic problems to you and you also might pass it on to your descendants unknowingly. Fortunately, only a very small percentage (less than 10 percent) of men have severe balding patterns, others usually have slight to moderate patterns. If inherited, these patterns usually will emerge by the time you reach the age of 30.

Genetic hair loss in men generally develops some patterns that look like a crown. Usually only the hair on the top of the head will be gone, while the hair on the sides will still grow. In women, it is usually more well rounded where hair losses will occur on all areas of the head. This kind of hair loss problem generally can not be cured without dabbling with your genetic make up, but new technologies have come up to cover the bald spot really well.

Diseases or sickness: There are a number of diseases and hormonal imbalances that can cause balding such as lupus (an autoimmune disease), hyperthyroidism and anemia. You should undergo a checkup to uncover this and your doctor should be able to prescribe the appropriate medication for your specific sickness.

Medications: Some medicines have been known to have some side effects that can cause hair loss. If your hair loss problem arises after you take a new medication, you should consider other alternatives. These types of medications can range from bill control pills to anti depressants. In addition, some types of cancer therapies like chemotherapy can also cause balding effect.

Stress: In rare cases, stress can also cause hair loss problems for some people. Only very few cases are reported under this category so far.

External causes: If you like to wear tight braid or some other forms of hair accessories, you should be be aware that sometimes these can also cause some strains on your hair.
