If more women undertook a breast self examination it could drastically increase the chances of early detection.By taking just a few minutes to do a breast self-examination, the stress factor and worry could be seriously reduced. On average,almost 70% of all breast cancers are found through self-exams and with early detection the 5-year survival rate is 98%.

If after a breast self examination you do detect a lump, arrange an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible, remember to not panic,the facts are that approximately 8 out of 10 lumps are not found to be cancerous. Never ever keep it to yourself,make sure you discuss it with someone,you know they say that a trouble shared is a trouble halved.

Women over the age of 20 should undertake a breast self examination regularly.

If you still have menstrual periods, the breast self examination should take place a few days after your period has ended,as during this time, your breasts are not tender. If you are not menstruating (such as in menopause), BSE should be performed on the same day each month.
