The many benefits of Orthodontic care

orthodontic careSome people are very fortunate to have naturally straight teeth which fit together perfectly,Everyone else may have to make use of some orthodontic care. Orthodontia is the branch of dentistry that deals with abnormalities of the teeth and face.

There are a variety of things that can contribute to misaligned or crooked teeth. One of the most common reasons goes back to when we first shed our baby teeth. When baby teeth fall out and are replaced by adult teeth sometimes the new teeth grow back  straight and with correct spacing between but for many the space in the mouth can be limited, this can crowd the teeth causing them to grow crooked. Other common reasons for crooked teeth can be, thumb sucking when younger, maybe some form of accident or a misaligned jaw, disease or premature loss of baby teeth is the cause. These different conditions are commonly referred to as Malocclusion.

There are many problems associated with Malocclusion. If teeth are crooked it can affect peoples self esteem, can make it difficult to thoroughly clean teeth which in turn can lead to problems with early tooth decay.Crooked teeth can also make it very awkward to eat properly, making chewing food that much harder.

Fear not because help is at hand.It is usually quite easy for a dentist to spot someone who is going to have future problems with misaligned teeth at a very early age and would benefit from orthodontic care.

Referral to an Orthodontist will be the next stage,an Orthodontist is a dentist that has been very well trained in dealing with patients who have problems with their jaws and/or teeth.

The specialist, will, after making a very thorough assessment of future orthodontic care, advise on the best treatment plan or orthodontic appliance for you. If an appliance (usually known as braces) is to be fitted, the choice is varied between a removable  brace, which can be removed to allow  for easier mouth hygiene , or a fixed brace, which remains in the mouth constantly until  the end of the treatment. Braces can be made of several different materials including, ceramic, plastic and of course metal. The length of any orthodontic care treatment can vary from person to person depending on the severity of the problem and can range from several months up to two years and could also involve removal of teeth.

It pays to listen to any advice given with regards to teeth problems and Orthodontic care and to consider your options very carefully. If left unchecked the problems may become far worse in the future.

You may well be very self conscious of wearing a brace for any amount of time but the benefits on completion of your Orthodontic care can be massive.
